General Manager
Transit Connection, Inc. is the transit operating company for the bus service for the Vineyard Transit Authority on Martha’s Vineyard Island. We are actively recruiting for the General Manager position who will directly report to the President of Transit Connection, Inc., but will work collectively with the VTA, the Administrator, management and staff.
We cannot stress enough that this is an “all hands-on deck” working environment. The General Manager will be expected to move a bus or even pick up a route, if needed. Ensuring that the service levels are met, and the bus system runs safely and smoothly as possible for the residents of Martha’s Vineyard Island is our top priority. Some of the duties and responsibilities include:
- Oversee and direct the staff of TCI in the operation of the Vineyard Transit Authority service to provide safe, efficient and customer focused service to the transit riders
- Ensure that the contractual requirements with the Vineyard Transit Authority are met and complied to and maintain an effective and productive working relationship with the client
- Maintain a harmonious and productive workplace environment
- Ensure that the delivery of transit services has adequate staff resources to fill all runs and keep overtime to an absolute necessary minimum
- Counsel, commend and appraise all staff including participating in interviewing and selecting new applicants for various positions
- Follow the principles of progress discipline when addressing employee performance issues
- Arrange for necessary staff training and skills developments appropriate to job requirements
- Liaise with the client in determining staffing and scheduling requirements to adequately meet seasonal demands in passenger volume and service levels
- Coordinate the planning, recruiting, and training of the corresponding quantity of staff for service level projections
- Promote programs and standards in workplace and vehicle operating safety
- Maintain a positive relationship with the Union representing vehicle operators and ensure Collective Agreement terms are observed
- Investigate and resolve issues that may arise in the workplace.
- May be required to support or participate in Collective Agreement negotiations.
- Heavily involved in the recruiting efforts of seasonal drivers and dispatch required to meet service levels during the peak season.
Experience Required:
- Experience in management of a bargaining unit represented workforce
- Experience in the transportation or transit industry working beyond the confirms of typical business hours and variables in staff scheduling providing seven day a week coverage
- A clean driving abstract and ability to secure a Commercial Driving License
- A knowledge of the service area demographics, points of interest, traffic patterns, and road topography

- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
- Knowledge and the ability to communicate in a second language is desirable
- Conversant with basic computer applications including email, Word, Excel and PowerPoint programs and data entry and retrieval and possess the ability to learn and use new programs and applications
- Effectively present and promote safe practices in the workplace including on the road
- Ability to learn new technologies in the workplace and in the transit industry taking any necessary training and skills upgrades
- Ability to respond and address emergent issues outside of routine business hours
- Ability to assess performance and take corrective action
