Tompkins Consolidated Area Transit, Inc. (TCAT) seeks to fill an influential leadership position – General Manager. Reporting to the TCAT Board of Directors, this position is responsible for the overall management of Tompkins County’s public transit bus system including duties such as providing guidance to management staff, leading transit bus system strategic planning, working closely with area senior transportation professionals, and maintaining liaison with state and federal transit officials.

Created in 1996 as a consolidation of three separate transit systems, Tompkins Consolidated Area Transit, Inc. serves a cosmopolitan and culturally diverse population of 104,000 in Tompkins County, New York. Comprising approximately 55 buses as well as 34 urban, campus, and rural bus routes, TCAT services 1.6 million annual miles to riders visiting Cornell University, Ithaca College, Tompkins Cortland Community College, as well as many retail, entertainment, commercial, residential and professional centers. In 2022, the system had a ridership of 2,488,000, or about 8,000 per weekday as of 2023’s third quarter.

TCAT seeks a leader who oversees managers of the following activities: operations and maintenance; safety, training, and security; service development; communications and marketing; human resources; and financial, budget, and business operations. The General Manager also plans and directs the operation of the county-wide public transit bus system; provides leadership, oversight, support, and guidance to TCAT management staff; works closely with the board of directors; and interacts with external agencies.

This position requires a bachelor's degree preferably in business management, public administration or related field; plus a minimum of five (5) years in public transportation management including operations, administration, finance, human resources, and public relations; and a minimum of five (5) years supervisory experience.
