Nelson\Nygaard Consulting Associates is seeking a highly organized and motivated senior-level staff member to join the firm’s nationally recognized transit planning practice in our Seattle office. This is an outstanding opportunity to support and grow our practice focused on developing transportation systems for vibrant, livable communities across the country. The right person will be able to develop and provide integrated, actionable solutions in keeping with Nelson\Nygaard’s current work, which emphasizes creative and innovative community involvement.

We are seeking an individual with a minimum of six years of experience and a strong interest in transit planning as well as background in developing sustainable strategies to improve community accessibility and mobility.

Responsibilities
In this position, the successful candidate will be expected to manage small projects and serve as a deputy project manager on larger, more complex projects. Work will include responsibility for client communication, overall task and project management, determining and managing analytical tasks, report writing and graphics development, public presentations, and other skills as necessary. The successful candidate is expected to support and lead proposals and other business development efforts. Providing guidance and oversight to junior staff is a must. You will work closely with Nelson\Nygaard’s principal, senior, and junior staff in our offices throughout the country. Our approach is to bring the most appropriate staff together, irrespective of where they are based, as collaboration across offices produces better outcomes and staff growth.

It is anticipated that projects will primarily be on the west coast and some project travel will likely be required. We support mid and large-size transit systems with projects ranging from Comprehensive Operations Analysis to Long Range Plans including Line-by-Line Studies, Transit Development Plans, Fare Policy Analysis, and studies regarding emerging mobility and transit technologies, such as electrification, microtransit, paratransit, and scheduling systems.

Qualifications and Requirements
The ideal candidate should have a strong core focus in transit planning but may also have a broad range of transportation and urban planning experience. Candidates must be able to demonstrate significant expertise in at least five of the following areas:
  • Short- and Long-Range Transit Planning
  • Comprehensive Operational Analysis (COA)
  • Transit/shuttle service design, planning and operations
  • Bus Rapid Transit Alternatives Analysis, Operations Planning, and/or Conceptual Design
  • Light rail, commuter rail, and/or streetcar Alternatives Analysis, Operations Planning, and/or Conceptual Design
  • Transit data analysis and visualization
  • Intelligent transit systems and technology such as Transit Signal Priority
  • Transit policy, funding and governance
  • Fare system pricing, policy and technology
  • Multimodal/Intermodal facility planning
  • Multi-system integration and coordination
  • Scheduling and runcutting
  • Bus transit speed and reliability enhancements
  • Land use and transit-oriented development
  • Coordination of community transportation services
  • Campus transportation planning
  • Alternative transit fuel (electrification and fuel cell) systems planning and/or conceptual design
  • Public outreach and engagement
  • Experience with GIS (Geographic Information Systems), graphics (InDesign, Illustrator, SketchUp), modeling (Synchro, VISSIM, TransCAD, STOPS), or database analysis

At a minimum, the candidate should meet the following qualifications:
  • At least 6 years of increasingly responsible experience in public transit planning.
  • Demonstrate recent consulting experience or for candidates from agency backgrounds, a strong aptitude for scoping and communicating project approaches.
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in city/urban planning, urban design, transportation engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience. A Master’s Degree in one of these fields is highly preferred.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and other communication skills.
  • The ability to manage complex projects on time and on budget.
  • Demonstrates advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

Salary and Benefits
Title placement and the annual salary range equivalent for this position depends on qualifications and years of experience.

Senior Associate I: $85,500 - $109,250
Senior Associate II: $99,000 - $126,500

Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance; pre-tax transit and bicycling benefits; a 401k program; life insurance; and paid time off. Additionally, we offer opportunities for in-person and in-office collaboration as well as flexibility for work from home up to 3 days per week.
