The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) seeks a Director - Standards and Transit Engineering to lead APTA’s Standards Program and serve as the primary engineering resource within the association. For standards, the Director will manage the standards-generation process, including oversight of staff and supporting consultants, prioritization of the standards projects, development of metrics to guide the standards program, and interface with the working groups and policy and planning committees involved in generating and maintaining standards. As the association’s primary engineer, the Director will lead APTA’s rail and bus engineering initiatives. This involves working closely with industry, academia, and federal partners, serving as staff advisor to technical committees, providing guidance to APTA members on technical and engineering issues, as well as supporting other APTA staff on rail, bus, zero emission, engineering, and technology related topics.

Requirements include a bachelor’s degree or higher in mechanical or civil engineering, coupled with a minimum of seven years’ experience in rail or bus engineering as well as and strong familiarity with the preparation and use of national standards. Prior involvement in APTA’s standards program is a plus, as is experience with railroad signal, rail car design or zero-emission vehicle technology. Must have excellent leadership and program management skills, oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with people and organizations as well as work independently and under pressure, meeting multiple deadlines. Must be willing to travel to support committee meetings and conferences.
