Description
Under the executive appointment of the Mayor, the Assistant Director – of DDOT Maintenance assists in planning, directing, and coordinating the maintenance division in the Detroit Department of Transportation (DDOT). This position is also responsible for providing leadership to attain the goals and objectives of the department.

Examples of Duties
  1. Oversee all activities of the maintenance division to include, including management staff, administrative functions, personnel issues, and day-to-day activities of repair, preventive maintenance, cleaning of buses, service vehicles, non-revenue automotive fleet, materials management, and building/facilities maintenance.

  2. Implements analyzes and modifies division processes and procedures to assure accuracy and efficiency in alignment with department goals and objectives; identifies new technology needs of the division, as well as enhancements to existing technology to support division processes.

  3. Assists in formulating policies and procedures in the areas of safety, maintenance operations, rolling stock and physical plant maintenance, materials management, and traffic engineering.

  4. Ensure the inspection of facilities to assess operational efficiency, and safety, and resolve problems.

  5. Assist in preparing operating statistics, reports, and cost analysis to determine and compare the efficiency of operations.

  6. Assist in determining the impacts of changes and procedures on services, costs, purchasing requirements, and personnel/budget requests.

  7. Participate in fiscal management, budgetary planning, and staffing analysis.

  8. Research and analyze trends in public transit operations and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.

  9. Assign and oversee special projects to division managers and staff.

  10. Represent the department at City Council meetings and interface with City agencies, other public officials, and key stakeholders to ensure departmental programs and activities are aligned with related City priorities in the absence of the Executive Director and/or Deputy Director.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in transportation, business administration, public administration, or related field of study.

Preferred: Master's Degree in Transportation Management, Business Administration, Supply Chain Management, or a related field of study preferred.
  • Minimum seven (7) years of experience in the administration and management of transportation systems.

  • Minimum three (3) years experience in a leadership capacity in a transportation system.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be substituted to meet this position's education and experience requirements.

  • Federal, state, and local rules and regulations governing the use and operation of a public transit system.

  • Principles and practices of public transit operations and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.

  • Current trends and developments in public transit operations and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.

  • Some travel required.

LICENSE, CERTIFICATION, AND OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Valid State of Michigan driver's operator license is required.

SALARY: $71,699.00 - $117,084.00 Annually
