This position is eligible for a $4,000 signing bonus starting immediately. The new-hire signing bonus pays out in four $1,000 installments upon these milestones:
  • Successful completion of probation period

  • Six-month anniversary of date of hire

  • One-year anniversary of date of hire

  • Eighteen-month anniversary of the hire date

This position involves all duties and responsibilities associated with light rail transit vehicle operations and work. An employee in this classification is responsible for carrying out those functions pertaining to the safe, courteous and efficient operation of assigned vehicles. Responsibilities include but are not limited to routine operations, special operations, recovering from on board vehicle failures of a minor nature, making public address announcements and exercising prudent judgment under a variety of conditions which may occur during a given tour of duty.

This is a safety sensitive position subject to the rules and regulation of the Drug and Alcohol policy.

Duties & Responsibilities:

ESSENTIAL
  • Conducts self in an appropriate manner as a representative of RTD, uses sound judgement at all times, works safely on the job, respects co-workers and assures the quality of services to all customers both internal and external.

  • Operates LRV in revenue and non-revenue service in strict compliance with RTD rules and procedures pertaining to operations.

  • Reports all unusual occurrences including vehicle and Maintenance-of-Way to the Controller and follows all traffic, safety, emergency and standard rules and operating procedure.

  • Makes LRV consist (multiple LRVs) up for service by altering consists as determined by schedule requirements and/or Controller's instructions and according to standard operating procedures.

  • Performs visual inspection of trains before beginning revenue service in addition to an end of service inspection following the storing of the LRV after revenue service.

  • Operate manually all track switches and other wayside equipment.

  • Operates test trains as required for acceptance of equipment and all other tests required which specify the need for train operations.

  • Uses radio communication equipment in accordance with Light Rail Rules and Standard Operating Procedures.

  • Provides customer service information in a courteous manner.

  • Provides accessibility for wheelchair and other ADA passengers to board and de-board in a safe courteous manner.

  • Completes accident and incident reports accurately at the end of scheduled shift.
OTHER:
  • Operates LRV into and out of shop building for repair or servicing and performs other duties required to support maintenance functions including operating LRV into Wash Bay as required.
All other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • 2 years of customer service experience demonstrating the ability to create a welcoming experience, making connections with customers through friendly and genuine conversation throughout each interaction, engaging customers with open ended questions about their customer service experience while leveraging their answer to tailor responses.

  • Must be at least nineteen (19) years of age.

  • Preferred professional driving experience within the last three (3) years. Experience may include, but not be limited to, previous operation of light rail vehicle, transit bus/school bus and/or truck.

  • Must possess a valid driver's license continually for the past 2 years. No DUI, DWI, or reckless driving in the past 5 years.

  • Ability to pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination by obtaining a DOT Medical Examiner's Certificate for a minimum of one (1)-year qualifying period and then maintains a current DOT Medical Examiner's Certificate thereafter. Medical Examiner must have a National Registry number.

  • Ability to pass a RTD required Physical Ability Assessment (PAA) related to the physical requirements of the essential functions of the job. Demonstrated ability to push/pull up to 125 pounds and lift/carry up to 60 pounds without assistance.

  • Ability to successfully complete the LRV Operator Training Program, obtain LRV Certification and maintain LRV Certification. (Failure of any of the above will lead to, at minimum, disqualification from the light rail transportation, and/or potentially termination of employment, Decision establishing these will be made on a case-by-case basis.

  • Ability to obtain and retain a thorough understanding of all new rules and procedures which are in effect.

  • Ability to use prudent judgment and common sense in making quick, safe decisions with minimal supervision and adapt to constantly changing operating environments.

  • Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing, while interacting with customers and RTD staff in a courteous, professional manner. This includes providing good customer service by attending to the needs of a diverse customer base in a sensitive manner.

  • Strong customer service skills.

  • Ability to read, write, and speak English.

  • Demonstrated physical ability to perform job duties to include: throwing rail switches, accessing and operating LRV, operating accessibility ramp, coupling/uncoupling LRVs, and raising/lowering LRV pantograph.

  • Ability to walk on track ballast, on uneven ground, sit for an extended period of time, and work in various outdoor weather.

  • Ability to work and maintain professional composure while under stress and pressure.

  • Ability to be re-certified periodically on standard operating procedures as well as through examination on all Rules and as hands-on proficiency.

  • Ability to maintain a high performance level of dependability, reliability and safety;

Additionally, for internal candidates, as demonstrated in the past six (6) months by:
  • No more than three (3) unexcused absence occurrences and three (3) unexcused tardy occurrences

  • No safety violations within the past (12) months.

  • No Light Rail Transportation related safety violations within the last (60) months.

  • No suspensions within the past (12) months

  • Otherwise demonstrated a history of high performance levels of dependability, reliability, and safety.

  • Extenuating circumstances will be reviewed.

  • Ability to work unusual hours, split shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.

  • An equivalent combination of education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics consistent with required qualifications as determined in the job analysis.
