Salary: $28.44 - $32.12 Hourly

This is a union/bargaining unit position. Compensation begins at $28.44 and increases incrementally every 6 months up to $32.12 at 18 months of employment. Annual increases thereafter occur per the Labor Agreement on July 1st of each year. Shift differentials are paid for staff working the 2nd and 3rd shifts.

Summary
Working with little to no supervision, ensure the operability of the buses and other vehicles that are owned and operated by SunLine Transit Agency. Performs preventative and routine service and maintenance according to the vehicle’s manufacturer’s recommendations, as well as inspect, troubleshoot, and determine the appropriate actions to address and repair mechanical and technical problems to return the vehicle to service in a timely manner. Oversee the work of the Mechanics B & C, and provide advice, guidance, and feedback to other mechanics and management regarding proactive steps to take to prevent breakdown or disruptive issues while vehicles are in service.

Serves as an inspector and trouble-shooter to determine proper corrective maintenance procedures prior to attempting repairs. Is proficient in using all tools and test equipment normally used during maintenance and inspection; is proficient in repairs, electrical, computerized engine controls, hydraulic, coolant and lubricant systems, transmissions and air-conditioning systems.

Duties & Responsibilities
  1. Conduct vehicle inspections as required by established schedules and perform preventative and routine service and maintenance on all mechanical, HVAC, electrical, lighting, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and other related systems and components according the vehicle or system manufacturer’s recommendations.

  2. Assess vehicles when issues and concerns are noted or reported; troubleshoot, and determine appropriate course of action to correct identified problems. Acquire needed parts and tools, and perform the repair timely and in a professional manner. Perform necessary shop and road testing to verify the effectiveness of the repair.

  3. Perform the essential functions of the position in the maintenance department or in the field as needed.

  4. Assist, instruct, and provide guidance and direction to the “B” and “C” mechanics whenever necessary or requested.

  5. Maintains appropriate service and maintenance records in accordance with applicable law and regulations.

  6. Performs related duties as necessary or special assignments as directed.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or the foreign equivalent, or G.E.D.

  • At least two years of experience as a maintenance mechanic or related position with heavy equipment and vehicles with conventional fuel sources.

  • Must have prior experience working with air brake system diagnosis and repair.

  • Proficiency and competency with the correct and safe use of hand and power tools normally used in the trade, as well as the use of special testing equipment safely and efficiently, to include, but not limited to computerized engine and mechanical systems diagnostics, battery, generator, alternator, and regulator test equipment, automotive oscilloscopes, injector testing, dwell tach, etc.

  • Proficiency and competency in the operation with all other machinery and equipment used in the maintenance process, including, but limited to, those used for welding, lifts and paint spray.

  • Know and understand the requirements for using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and apply that knowledge when performing daily tasks.

  • Possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License Class B, or obtain the license within three months of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Three or more year’s experience with conventional and/or alternative fuel sources, including CNG and electric or hydrogen.

  2. Certification in diesel mechanics and/or alternative fuel sources.

  3. Specific experience in servicing and repairing the following systems: HVAC, wheelchair lift systems, fire suppression, ThermoKing, or other similar and related systems.

  4. Passenger transportation experience desirable.
