The Regional Transit Authority gets people moving around New Orleans. Our transit services bring hard-working commuters to their jobs, students to their schools and fun seekers to entertainment, shopping areas and restaurants. We provide mobility to residents of the city as well as tourists, taking them to and from their hotels to historical neighborhoods and countless attractions. RTA’s system includes five streetcar lines, 34 bus routes, two ferry routes and paratransit services. Our passengers take more than 19 million rides every year.

JOB SUMMARY
Operate a LIFT Van unit according to established safety and defensive standards, RTA performance codes, and the traffic laws of the State of Louisiana.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Safely operates a passenger vehicle over a route as outlined by the Manifest.

  • Treat all LIFT passengers in a courteous, safe, and respectful manner by providing excellent customer service.

  • Communicates via radio with LIFT dispatcher all information relative to passenger.

  • Reports all unusual incidents and accidents.

  • Completes the daily manifest (or schedule) sheet and other attached reports with pertinent information.

  • Prepares reports regarding incidents, accidents, and vehicle defects in a timely and accurate manner.

  • Maintains a run/route in accordance with the manifest.

  • Monitors the fare box and reports fare irregularities to the LIFT dispatcher.

  • Properly operates the wheelchair lift device and accurately perform tie down procedures.

  • Contributes to ensuring that the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) policies and programs of RTA are carried out
OTHER FUNCTIONS
  • Represent the RTA in litigation involving accidents and incidents.

  • Attend training sessions and other meetings as required.

  • Performs other job related duties in keeping with the goals and objectives of RTA.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Must be able to operate a transit vehicle in a safe and defensive manner.

  • Must be able to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

  • Must have the ability to compute basic arithmetic, and tell time accurately.

  • Read, write, speak, and understand English

EDUCATION
High school diploma or G.E.D., college or vocational and/or technical training is preferred.

EXPERIENCE
Previous driving experience preferred.

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS/DEMANDS
  • Must obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a "P" endorsement issued by the State of Louisiana.

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.

  • Must provide proof of being fully vaccinated with the COVID-19 vaccine before start date.

  • Must submit to criminal background check, the results of which must meet hiring criteria for the role.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work is performed in all types of weather conditions. Must be able to work a shift that spans twenty four (24) hours. May be required to operate a LIFT transit vehicle up to fifteen (15) hours and fifty nine (59) minutes. Must be able to assist a wheelchair passenger onto the LIFT vehicle with the assistance of mechanical wheelchair lift devise. Must be able to board and alight transit vehicle and sit for long periods of time in a seat fastened with a seat belt.

This is a designated Safety Sensitive Position covered under USDOT (Federal Transit Administration [FTA] Regulations). Drug and Alcohol Testing is conducted using FTA regulations.
