SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Supervises and manages a team and/or management processes including the full range of management duties
  • Recruits, interviews, hires, and appraises employees (performance evaluations) on their productivity
  • Delegates and oversees the daily workflow of the department
  • Motivates, guides, mentors, and coach employees on their development
  • Recommends to senior management internal promotions and changes including discipline and terminations of employees in accordance with company policy

JOB SUMMARY
The Supervisor Bus Maintenance is responsible for the planning, scheduling, directing and controlling of the maintenance operations of the Bus Garage. This involves the supervision of licensed coach technicians, body persons, and other semi-skilled and unskilled employees. This position manages the cleaning, servicing, inspection, maintenance, repair and emergency road services functions for both revenue and non- revenue vehicles in order to provide safe, clean, and mechanically reliable vehicles to the Operations Department. Under the direction of the Maintenance Manager this position may be called upon to conduct training sessions, technical investigations and undertake procedural quality audits as well as possibly substitute for other supervisory staff, including the Maintenance Manager, during periods of absences.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provides sufficient numbers of clean, serviced and safe buses to the Operations Department as scheduled
  • Performs DOT safety inspections, completing and signing DOT certificates, affixing the associated stickers and maintain the necessary documentation.
  • Performs random quality checks to ensure that repairs and maintenance functions that are made to vehicle systems are correct and meet DOT, and the regions standards.
  • Performs inspection quality checks to ensure all servicing and cleaning functions are carried out according to current procedures and standard operation practices.
  • Liaises with the Operations Department when receiving calls concerning mechanical failures of vehicles on the road and determine the correct course of action to minimize delays to the public.
  • Conducts technical investigations into component failures and maintenance problems as required.
  • Ensures that vehicle repairs and data information are correct, entered the maintenance program, and run reports to identify maintenance program performance and associated failure analysis.
  • Identifies training needs of employees and ensures new technologies and methods are investigated and implemented where appropriate (multi-plex, new control systems, communications systems, etc.)
  • Conducts refresher training and information meetings as deemed necessary.
  • Performs license and certification audits to ensure employees are trained on all job- related equipment and have current safety orientation on all aspects of the garage.
  • Establishes work schedules and adjusts as necessary accounting for absences due to training, vacations, unfilled vacancies, employee absenteeism, to ensure sufficient manpower is available to meet scheduled bus service requirements.
  • Ensures all work is prioritized and on schedule through the effective use of materials, labor and facility resources.
  • Prepares various reports, worksheets, estimates, correspondence, minutes of meetings and other documentation as requested.
  • Makes recommendations and suggestions as to work methods and procedures and identifying and implementing cost saving opportunities.
  • Performs tests, evaluations and estimates to ensure that products and equipment provided are in accordance with required technical performance and quality specifications.
  • Orders material, parts, equipment and supplies, ensuring that an adequate supply is on hand by determining needs, reviewing inventory and sources of supply.
  • Maintains discipline and promotes harmony in the garage as well as ascertaining facts to resolve complaints and minor grievances.
  • Performs annual Employee Performance Appraisals and counsel employees as needed to assist them in meeting expectations and help improve their performance and progress in their careers.
  • Ensures all union agreements, departmental, and contractual obligations are followed fairly and consistently.
  • Investigates injuries, accidents, and other workplace incidents taking the appropriate action to prevent or minimize reoccurrences.
  • Participates in all safety initiatives, safety talks, safety meetings and address all concerns in a timely manner
  • Contributes to budget planning by providing costs or estimates by reviewing work requirements, estimating labor materials, equipment and other associated cost.

EDUCATION
Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate with successful completion of a diesel engine or related vehicular maintenance program preferred.

OR an equivalent combination of education and experience or demonstrated acceptable technical proficiency in vehicle maintenance/repair work may be acceptable.

EXPERIENCE
  • Considerable progressively responsible technical experience in the vehicular maintenance field is required, preferably with some experience in a lead or supervisory capacity.
  • A minimum of four (4) years in supervision of a maintenance or diesel-powered bus and/or heavy truck fleet. Must have experience in shop practices, mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and air conditioning systems.

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS/DEMANDS
Must possess a valid Louisiana Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A-P.

Must provide proof of being fully vaccinated with the COVID-19 vaccine before start date.

Must submit to criminal background check, the results of which must meet hiring criteria for the role.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Performs physical activities that involve office ergonomics such as computer work, filing telephone and regular office activities, some walking and physical activities involving bus and equipment inspections, mechanical demonstrations and some handling of materials will be required. Some exposure to inclement weather when in yard investigating technical problems or accidents. May be exposed to some dirt and fumes.

This is a designated Safety Sensitive Position Covered under USDOT (Federal Transit Administration [FTA] Regulations). Drug and Alcohol Testing is conducted using FTA regulations.
