The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) located in Cleveland, Ohio, is searching for a detail oriented Transportation Safety Specialist II to join its Safety team. Reporting to the Manager of Safety, the Transportation Safety Specialist II will be part of a vigilant safety awareness and action team whose mission is to maintain local, state, and federal transportation safety regulations and initiatives throughout the Authority. Duties:
Coordinates all aspects of transportation safety for Bus, Rail, Paratransit and non-revenue vehicle operations, under direction of the Department Manager. Initiates, facilitates, and participates in meetings with various RTA departments as well as outside agencies regarding safety matters. Analyzes accident data to develop recommendations for improvement. Serves as an advisor to local safety committees and supports executive safety committee meetings with safety information updates; assists in resolving hazards, and follow-up on safety suggestions. Investigates and/or assists in the investigation of major bus, rail, and other vehicle accidents. Conducts root cause analysis and provides recommendations for all incidents. Follows-up on all recommendations to completion. On-call status 24/7, on a rotating schedule. Reviews specifications for safety standards. Leads in the development, implementation, and instruction of safety programs. Conducts or assists in conducting safety inspections at various GCRTA properties. Conducts audits and safety certifications, to determine compliance with Systems Safety Program Plan. Develops compliance action plan(s); monitors and evaluates results. Works with all departments, districts, and divisions within the GCRTA to ensure compliance with all established safety regulations, policies and procedures in order to provide the highest level of safety within the agency. This position will promote a safe and secure atmosphere, follow all safety and security rules and perform other related duties as assigned. Manages projects as assigned by the Manager or Director of Safety.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent.

  • Applicants must have a minimum of four (4) years of work experience in a bus/rail transportation, manufacturing, construction, or consulting environment. A bachelor's degree in safety, environmental science, engineering or related technical area may be substituted for a portion of the required years of work experience.

  • Applicants must be experienced with working in a results oriented, fast paced, deadline driven work environment. The successful candidate will be an effective problem solver, ambitious, willing and able to work non-traditional hours (will work a 24/7 on-call on a rotating schedule), and have excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Applicants must be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of OSHA, hazard analysis, statistical trending, and root cause analysis. Applicants must be proficient MS Office Suite, specifically: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Project management software experience is a plus.

  • Professional safety designations desired, but not required. Transit safety experience and rail state safety oversight experience is preferred.

  • Applicants must possess a valid Ohio Driver's License with a good driving record.
