KL2 Connects LLC has been retained by TriMet to identify candidates for two key positions: 1) Executive Director, Safety and Security, and 2) Director, Safety Management Systems and Environmental Services.

TriMet operates mass transit in a region that spans most of the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area, operating 659 buses on 78 lines, 145 MAX light rail cars on 5 lines, and 268 LIFT paratransit vehicles.

(1) Reporting to the GM, the Executive Team position of Executive Director, Safety & Security is responsible for safety and security practices and a culture where the identification, reduction and prevention of risk is tightly woven into TriMet’s fabric. The Director is responsible for overseeing the Safety, Security, Transit Police, and Environmental departments and serves as TriMet’s Accountable Executive and Chief Safety Officer across its Light Rail, Bus, Paratransit, Commuter Rail, and Street Car modes.

Requirements: This position requires a minimum of a Bachelor's in Risk Management, Management, Public Safety, or a related discipline plus 12 years of public or private sector senior-level management experience related to organizational/public safety. Strongly preferred are experience with safety management systems, management of multiple departments, and management of vendor contracts involving on-site contract personnel.

(2) Reporting to the ED Safety & Security, the Director, Safety Management Systems and Environmental Services directs, provides regulatory oversight, and administers agency-wide drug and alcohol, environmental health, and engineering and construction safety management systems. The Director is responsible for the development and implementation of agency and contractor environmental programs (such as WES commuter rail and LIFT paratransit); oversees engineering/construction projects (facilities, rail, and division transit); is the agency lead for regulatory agencies (FTA, ODOT, FRA, NTSB, OR-OSHA, and others); is responsible for the health and welfare of employees and riders; is responsible for the development and oversight of safety committees; and acts as subject matter advisor to the Crash Advisory Committee and the GM.

Requirements: This position requires a minimum of a Bachelor's (preferably in Occupational Safety and Health, Safety Engineering, or Science) plus 11 years total credited experience (5 developing/implementing operational/passenger safety/occupational safety and health programs); 2 in heavy rail, commuter rail, light rail, or streetcar and bus operations; 2 overseeing safety for the design and construction of light rail extensions, building construction, and other major capital projects; and 3 years of management experience. FTA Transit Safety & Security Program Practitioner and Certified Safety Professional Designation will be required within 3 years of hire.
