The City of San Bruno is seeking an innovative and pragmatic leader to become the City’s next Public Works Director.

San Bruno is an ethnically and culturally diverse city with over 42,000 residents and maintains a small-town feel within a large metropolitan area. San Bruno has a General Fund budget for FY 2021-2022 of $50.8 million and has a workforce of 265 full-time employees.

The successful candidate will report to the City Manager and is responsible for the day to day management and operations of a department consisting of 67 employees delivering public works and utilities services through five operating divisions: Engineering and Administration, Water, Wastewater, Streets, and Facilities & Garage, through the support of two Deputy Directors. The Director will manage an annual budget of approximately $107.7 million including an operating budget of $3.8 million, and a capital improvement budget of 98 projects totaling over $79.5 million.

Competitive candidates will possess broad interdisciplinary and technical background. Strategic municipal management, community engagement, and organizational development experience coupled with a leadership style marked with solid people skills, and a passion for public service is critical. A minimum of six years of public works experience, with two years of senior level supervisory experience is required. A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and current registration as a California Professional Engineer is preferred.
