The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is currently seeking individuals for the role of Assistant Superintendent, Bus Service Operations.

WMATA Bus Transportation plays an integral role in the delivery of bus services to the Washington Metropolitan region with the overall goal to deliver safe, convenient, reliable and compliant bus transportation services. The ideal candidate will be a leader and innovative thinker while ensuring the required transportation activities are carried out within the assigned division/garage. The candidate will partner with the Superintendent, Bus Service Operations to ensure a staff upwards of 400+ obtain the necessary training needed to perform effectively and efficiently. WMATA operates twenty- four (24) hours, seven (7) days a week, three hundred & sixty-five (365) days a year.

The incumbent in this role must be able to manage projects, multitask and display the ability to prioritize, forge partnerships within the organization and with entities outside the organization. Additional duties include working in a supportive and collaborative capacity with the Superintendent, Bus Services. Job Summary/Duties:
The incumbent will be responsible for bus operations supervisory and administrative work involving the direction of the transportation function of the Bladensburg operating division. The incumbent will assist the Superintendent in maintaining optimal service performance and for identifying and resolving service issues. The Assistant Superintendent will also assist the Superintendent with providing performance feedback to employees using several methodologies i.e., coaching, counseling, performance management, etc to address performance issues and to recognize good performance. The Assistant Superintendent will work closely with the Superintendent to ensure a high level of customer service is provided to the public. The Assistant Superintendent has the authority to take action within the established guidelines, and will be evaluated on the effectiveness of all bus transportation service, workforce productivity, cost performance, and other service programming and activities. This position is a management level position responsible for the technical, administrative, and customer service work at the Bladensburg Bus Division.
  • Provides leadership, directions, and management over the personnel and activities of Bus Service Operations. Assists in the overall management of the department.

  • Provides counsel and guidance to personnel.

  • Ensures employees adhere and comply with WMATA’s established safety and operating guidelines.

  • Assists Superintendent to ensure and maintain a healthy working environment that is focused on safety.

  • Assists the Superintendent to control the approved budget the assigned division to include payment of overtime, non-productive time, premium time, and pay to platform time.

  • Assists Superintendent in providing Clerks, Operators and Service Operation Managers the necessary tools that are needed to effectively perform their jobs.

  • Assists Superintendent in establishing and maintaining favorable working relationships with peers and subordinates to foster and promote a cooperative and harmonious working climate which will be conducive to maximize employee morale, productivity, and efficiency/effectiveness.

  • Supervises, trains, and provides guidance to Service Operation Managers in the area of accident investigation, labor contracts, rules and regulations, and corrective action.

  • Works closely with Divisional Training Instructors to ensure the following: remedial training is provided for operators who are identified; all 30-60-90 Day evaluations are completed as scheduled; follow-up rides are completed; and to ensure all operators receive refresher training.

  • Reviews ongoing performance results for total results, takes corrective measures with authorization, escalate as needed.

  • Projects a favorable image of the company to promote its goals and objectives and foster and enhance public recognition and acceptance of all of its areas of endeavors.

  • Assists Superintendent with the coordination of special events and external activities including regional partners.

  • Keeps immediate superior promptly and fully informed of all problems or unusual matters of significance and takes prompt corrective action where necessary or suggests alternative courses of action which may be taken.

  • Maintains compliance with federal and state laws related to privacy and confidentiality ensuring information is shared only on an as needed basis.

  • Interacts with customers, communities, businesses to identify and assist with the implementation of new service and improvements to existing service.

  • Ensures all work assignments are filled and that the scheduled service is provided.

  • Discuss accidents, complaints, on duty injuries with employees in order to improve operating performance and or resolve operating challenges.

Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Transportation, Business/Public Administration, Engineering or a related field. A minimum of seven (7) years progressively responsible transportation operations/management experience. Experience as a Street Supervisor, Operations Supervisor, or Manager Service Operations. Supervisory experience is required.

Experience in lieu of education will be considered if candidate can effectively demonstrate progressively responsible transportation operations/management experience. Experience as a Street Supervisor, Operations Supervisor, or Manager Service Operations. Supervisory experience is required.
