GENERAL PURPOSE:
Under general supervision, performs preventative and remedial maintenance along with other required tasks on electronic devices associated with systems such as Security (Camera, Emergency Phones), Fare Collection (Ticket Vending Machines, ORCA Card Readers), Heavy Rail Train (Security Systems, Wi-Fi, Automated Passenger Counters), Passenger Information (Variable Message Signs, Public Address), and others. The equipment is located at Sound Transit heavy rail and light rail stations and transit centers throughout the region.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The following duties are a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

• Under minimal supervision, tests, troubleshoots, calibrates, repairs, overhauls, and performs corrective and preventive maintenance on all Transit Systems electronic and electro-mechanical devices such as cameras, SIP devices, infrared counters, digital signage, smart card readers, coin and bill validators, credit card readers, PIN pads, networking devices, data processors, thermal printers, touch screens, and power supplies.

• Evaluates the functionality and condition of back-end support systems and field equipment. Services, troubleshoots, repairs, maintains, designs, and installs support systems. Utilizes proprietary systems software and other tools to assist with problem analysis for repair, maintenance, and configuration of equipment.

• Uses hand tools, power tools, and specialized system specific diagnostic equipment appropriate for installation, maintenance, and repair of electronic or electro-mechanical devices.

• Utilizes test instruments for preventive maintenance and to ensure compliance with manufacturer requirements. Designs and fabricates wiring harnesses and other items that will facilitate the testing and/or troubleshooting process. Identify and procure necessary tools, supplies, and assets to carry out duties and ensure operational needs are met.

• Utilizes specialized system monitoring equipment and diagnostic tools to locate and correct faults within the system. Runs reports and forecasts potential system issues.

• Maintains all records associated with tracking the corrective and preventative maintenance of systems. Creates and updates records of system’s performance, daily work activities, asset movement, and related information. Enters data into asset management system and ensures accuracy of data in accordance with Sound Transit requirements. Conducts regular auditing within asset management program as required.

• Demonstrates continuous awareness to improve day to day operations, decrease response times, streamline work processes, improve systems performance, and work collaboratively with a sense of urgency to provide quality customer service to internal and external entities.

• May oversee the work of contracted vendors performing installation work, ensuring standards in connectivity, quality, and workmanship are met. Guides and assists lower level personnel when necessary and/or performs duties of lower level.

• May assist engineering and installation teams with installing new equipment and project handover documentation ensuring a completed delivery in accordance with strict timelines. Provides knowledge in design/build scenarios to help deliver projects that meet our standards and can be maintained efficiently.

• Provides support to the department on matters as directed. Attends and participates in professional group meetings. Maintains awareness of new trends and developments in the fields related to area of assignment. Ensures Agency values are interpreted and applied consistently and effectively. Ensures accountability and compliance with all current and applicable state and federal laws, Agency policies and procedures, rules and regulations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in electronics or electronic communication systems, or closely related field and three years of experience performing installation, maintenance, and repair work of computer systems, logic systems, analog and digital circuitry or electro-mechanical devices; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

• The uses, calibration, and care of electronic test equipment.

• Cable distribution, cable termination, and basic principles of electricity.

• Standard electronic wiring, color-coding, and connection schemes.

• Computerized and microprocessor controlled electronic systems operation and theory.

• Principles of business letter writing and basic report preparation.

• English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

• Modern office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and statistical databases.

• Basic networking knowledge and network troubleshooting. Basic hand tool use and safety.

• Utilizing computer hardware and software to prepare spreadsheets and reports.

• Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with department staff, management, vendors, outside agencies, community groups, and the public.

• Interpreting and applying policies and procedures sufficient to administer, discuss, resolve, and explain them to staff and other constituencies.

• Diagnosing problems or malfunctions and accomplishing repairs in a minimal amount of time.

• Comprehending and making inferences from material written in the English language and understanding and following complex schematics, circuit diagrams, service requests, worksheets, floor plans, electrical wiring plans, construction blueprints, and related documents.

• Making skillful controlled manipulations of small objects such as wiring, tools, and equipment components.

• Working in small cramped areas, such as equipment enclosures.

• Learning job related material through oral instruction, observation, structured lecture, and reading.

• Performing mathematical calculations.

• Working under pressure, handling significant problems or tasks, which come up simultaneously or unexpectedly.

• Effectively engaging in difficult conversations when working collaboratively with other departments, Agency officials, and outside agencies.

• Safe use of aerial lift equipment and ladders for elevated repair work.

Physical Demands / Work Environment:

• Work is performed in a mixed environment of office and train station platforms, transit centers, heavy and light rail vehicles.

• Subject to standing, walking, bending, reaching, stooping, and lifting of objects up to 50 pounds; may occasionally be exposed to dangerous machinery, extreme weather conditions, potential physical harms, and extreme noise when conducting site visits and when working in the field.

• Must be able to work effectively while both working alone and in a team environment.
