The Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority (BJCTA) is seeking an innovative, strategic, and experienced transportation professional to serve as the Chief Executive Officer.

BJCTA funds and operates the leading transportation system in Central Alabama, the Metro Area Express (MAX), and is dedicated to providing its ridership with safe, reliable, and accessible transit that contributes to the economy, vitality, and sustainability of the region. BJCTA has a service area of 200 square miles, serves 9 municipalities, and is governed by a 9-member board of directors.

BJCTA provides fixed route, demand response paratransit, and regional direct routes with its fleet of 110 revenue vehicles. All BJCTA buses are fueled by clean burning, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and BJCTA is excited to introduce new, all-electric buses this year to further reduce the fleet’s impact on the environment.

BJCTA is seeking an individual who can continue to uphold the agency’s commitment to the vibrant community it serves and further enhance the services provided to the community. The CEO has general Agency oversight to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient service across the region and will lead efforts to carry out all Board directives and Agency goals and objectives. The CEO will direct and lead initiatives to implement new technologies, increase ridership, engage with the community, encourage transit-oriented mixed-use development, and develop strategic plans to further the success of the agency.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of ten (10) years of executive leadership experience in a complex operating environment and demonstrated experience serving in an executive capacity for a transit or similar organization, or a combination of education and other experience may be considered in lieu of 10 years of executive leadership experience. Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree or higher in Business, Public Administration, Urban Planning and Transportation Management, or a related field.
