Summary
Reporting to the Deputy Executive Officer, the Fleet Maintenance Director oversees and prioritizes the maintenance, repair, and warranty administration for METRO’s revenue fleet and all non-revenue support vehicles.

Schedule: M – F (8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.)

Status: Exempt

Salary: Commensurate with experience and qualifications

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & DUTIES, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO:
  1. Regular and predictable attendance and performance of essential job functions and duties.
  2. Directs the overall activities and functions of METRO’s Fleet Maintenance Department and ensures the timely and quality repair and maintenance of all fleet vehicles and equipment.
  3. Oversees the supervision of departmental employees and assists in the development of performance standards and training programs. Develops, mentors, and coaches a diverse staff and maintains a culture of respect, accountability, safety, and customer service.
  4. Promotes repair and maintenance efficiencies consistent with transit industry best practices. Acts as an agent of change and process improvement.
  5. Develops, maintains, and implements departmental written operating and control procedures, standard repair times, work quality, and work safety standards.
  6. Partners with METRO Operations Director and other management throughout the organization to drive efficiency and a positive working environment and excellent service to clients.
  7. Reviews completed repair and maintenance work for timeliness, completeness, accuracy, and quality.
  8. Assures departmental compliance to meet Federal Transportation Administration (FTA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and requirements.
  9. Promotes and oversees the diesel technician intern program.
  10. Maintains fleet vehicle repair, maintenance, and mileage records.
  11. Maintains departmental employee seniority list. Oversees and approves payroll.
  12. Assists purchasing staff members with the reconciliation of parts inventory and acquisition of equipment.
  13. Facilitates and leads all preventive maintenance programs and administers maintenance procedures to assure that fleet vehicles and equipment receive required service.
  14. Responsible for compliance with all hazardous waste handling and disposal requirements.
  15. Prepares and maintains annual departmental operating budget.
  16. Prepares detailed specifications for vehicle and equipment procurements.
  17. Oversees the implementation of Metro’s Asset Management Plan.
  18. Administers provisions of the collectively bargained agreement, prepares and documents disciplinary hearings as needed, and acts as Second-Step Maintenance Department Grievance Officer.
  19. Ensures a safe work environment exists and all fleet maintenance activities comply with State and Federal law, statutes, regulations, and METRO procedures and policies as amended from time to time.
  20. Performs other related duties, as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Four-year degree in engineering, business, management, logistics, or related topics, preferred. Minimum of 7 years experience in managing the maintenance and repair of a heavy-duty vehicle fleet consisting of automotive, diesel, compressed natural gas (CNG), and/or alternate fuel. Background in transit fleet maintenance preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership and team building skills.
  • Strong knowledge of heavy-duty vehicle service and maintenance, safety standards, and fleet operations.
  • Ability to effectively manage a fleet of approximately 200 revenue and non-revenue vehicles, labor relations, employee development, and supervision.
  • Knowledge of current and developing technologies that assist in METRO’s ability to provide cost-effective, environmentally friendly transit services.
  • Knowledge of stores management, including inventory and replacement scheduling.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to present information clearly to employees, peers, and officers.
  • Experience working with union leadership and represented employees and understanding of collectively bargained for agreements.
  • Ability to prioritize and adapt quickly.
  • Strong technical and analytical skills.
