Spokane Transit is in the middle of a dynamic 10-year plan called STA Moving Forward. The purpose of this plan is to maintain, improve, and expand transit services throughout Spokane County to meet the needs of our growing community. We are currently searching for a Vehicle Maintenance Manager to lead and manage our vehicle maintenance team.

As the Vehicle Maintenance Manager you will provide oversight of the day-to-day operations of the Fixed Route and Paratransit Vehicle Maintenance Departments and contracted fleet maintenance services. You will provide direction and policy guidance, supervise and schedule activities for over 90 employees to ensure the safe, proper, and efficient operation, maintenance, and repair for a fleet of over 400 vehicles. Your duties will also include monitoring vendor performance, negotiating and resolving identified discrepancies and warranty issues. You will ensure vehicle records and maintenance history files are properly maintained which will directly affect maintenance indicators for operational efficiency of the Vehicle Maintenance Department and STA.

Tapping into your managerial experience, you will hire, counsel and discipline employees, and assist in resolving grievances. Your communication skills will be extremely valuable as you regularly have contact with agency administration and personnel, union representatives, transit officials, vendors, suppliers, and others to exchange information and resolve issues.

Your financial responsibilities will include developing budgets and monitoring and authorizing expenditures, writing and developing maintenance contracts, and receiving new battery electric buses and general vehicle inventory. In cooperation with others, you will review and analyze maintenance data and performance indicators such as labor hours and cost, payroll data, fluids and fuel reconciliation, mileage, road calls, preventative maintenance, warranties and inventory. Identifying trends and implementing corrective action to address areas of need and maintain compliance with state and federal regulations will be an important aspect of your job.

As you ensure the provision of adequate vehicles and equipment to meet operating costs and maintenance needs, you will have a substantial impact on Spokane Transit’s ability to provide safe, accessible, convenient, and efficient public transportation services to the Spokane region.

 

IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE

  • Strong management and leadership skills.
  • Understanding of methods and techniques of designing preventative maintenance programs
  • Demonstrated application and working knowledge of maintenance of vehicles best practice
  • Ability to supervise several employees
  • Skill and ability to provide oversight to ensure proper diagnostic and repair of STA vehicles and to provide training and development to improve skill sets of current employees
  • Demonstrated measurable and documented indicators of cooperative and collaborative working relationships across all organizational functions and stakeholders, particularly transportation, safety & loss control, purchasing, planning, finance, human resources, communication, and employee relations
  • Ability to work with considerable independent planning, arranging and prioritizing work and apply independent judgment in determining proper actions to ensure that best practices, established standards, policies, laws, codes, and regulations are followed 
  • Understanding of principles and practices of maintaining public transit system vehicles and equipment
  • Understanding of principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation
  • Consistently demonstrated commitment to internal and external customer service

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Advanced education in maintenance, management, and leadership preferred
  • Must have seven to ten years of experience in vehicle maintenance
  • Must have at least five years of experience supervising a vehicle maintenance department
  • Supervisory experience for a public agency in a unionized environment preferred
  • Transit experience preferred with a heavy-duty diesel background preferred
  • Valid driver’s license from state of residence required
  • Ability to obtain a Class A CDL with passenger and air brakes endorsements preferred 
  • Experience within the Microsoft environment, and ability to quickly learn and understand transit specific computer programs required
