Position Overview:
The Lead Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance of Windham Region Transit District vehicles, facilities, and grounds. This position is a participatory lead technician role, responsible for vehicle repair as well as oversight of the district’s maintenance program and personnel.

Essential Job Functions
  • Repairs and maintains diesel and gasoline engines and bus equipment
  • Keeps in regular contact with the Operations Manager and Administrator.
  • Schedules and administers fleet maintenance assists in troubleshooting problems with equipment.
  • Communicates availability of vehicles for service with dispatch and other operations personnel.
  • Supervises maintenance operations. Plans and distributes the work. Delegates responsibilities as appropriate and monitors performance. Involved in personnel actions (e.g. hiring, promotions, and discipline).
  • Maintains vehicle, equipment, and facility repair records in fleet management software.
  • Ensures compliance on a day-to-day basis with state, federal, and District requirements.
  • Works closely with the Administrator providing status of maintenance and budget requirements. Reviews repair orders.
  • Orders fuel for vehicles, orders parts, and subcontracts repair work.
  • Supervises bus fueling and cleaning. May arrange services for building and ground keeping.
  • Identifies and recommends actions to improve operating efficiency.
  • Trains and motivates maintenance staff.
  • Works over scheduled hours as required.
  • Required to perform hands-on vehicle repairs and work activities
  • Completes other duties as assigned.

  • Must be able to work in a crouched position or on the back lying on a mechanic’s dolly beneath motor vehicle equipment.
  • Subjected to dust, dirt, and grease conditions.
  • Sit for up to several consecutive hours at a time.
  • Frequently use hands to finger, handle or feel
  • Frequently use arms, elbows, shoulders, and wrists.
  • Frequently bend knees.
  • Frequently reach with hands and arms at, below and above shoulder level
  • Occasionally stand, walk climb, bend, stoop, squat, twist, and crouch or climb stairs.
  • Occasionally lift, push/pull and/or move up to 100 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance, vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • The employee is also frequently required to hear and speak.

Requirements
  • Must possess a valid Connecticut Driver’s License with a Class B CDL and passenger endorsement.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 3+ years of hands-on mechanical supervisory experience
  • Good written and oral communications skills
  • Computer skills.
  • Industry experience repairing and maintaining diesel engines and transit bus equipment is preferred.
  • Ability to learn, to interpret, and to apply District’s policies and work independently without immediate and constant supervision.
  • Ability to maintain a good working relationship with all coworkers and the general public and to use good judgment in recognizing the scope of authority.
  • Ability to pass a DOT physical performed by WRTD’s physician.
  • Attend training classes provided by the District and successfully completes each course.
  • Subject to FTA drug and alcohol testing requirements.
