This position is for either a Systems Engineer OR Senior Systems Engineer (Traction Electrification/OCS), depending on experience.

SYSTEMS ENGINEER (TRACTION ELECTRIFICATION / OCS)
SALARY RANGE: $85,000 - $125,000 Annually

SENIOR SYSTEMS ENGINEER (TRACTION ELECTRIFICATION / OCS)
SALARY RANGE: $100,000 - $150,000 Annually

Our systems team supports the agency with traction power and OCS expertise. Hiring level will be determined by candidate qualifications and experience within the team. Successful applicants will ensure the highest standards of safety, technical performance, quality, cost, and schedule goals are met or exceeded and continuously strive to improve our traction power and OCS systems. A minimum of an engineering degree is required. Additional requirements will apply depending on level hired.

GENERAL PURPOSE:
Under general direction, provides traction electrification systems engineering activities for capital projects and operations support. Traction electrification includes incoming AC utility feeds and medium voltage AC power distribution, DC traction power substations, overhead contact systems (OCS) and related automated monitoring and control systems.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS for SYSTEMS ENGINEER (TRACTION ELECTRIFICATION / OCS):
The following duties are a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.
  • Provides input to agency design criteria, standard specifications and technical drawings for traction power and OCS.
  • Reviews consultant design submittals for conformance with agency design criteria and national and local codes.
  • Reviews contractor construction submittals and requests for information for conformance with contract technical requirements.
  • Supports testing and commissioning activities for system expansion projects and existing system upgrades and replacements.
  • Performs field surveys and inspections of installed traction electrification systems.
  • Participates in hazard and risk analyses, value analysis and schedule reviews.
  • Provides engineering assistance to Operations department as needed on matters concerning repair, maintenance, and modification to existing traction electrification equipment.
  • Performs root cause analysis and repair of technical issues and trends; assist team members as needed to resolve advanced technical issues.
  • It is the responsibility of all employees to follow the Agency safety rules, regulations, and procedures pertaining to their assigned duties and responsibilities, which could include systems, operations, and/or other employees.
  • It is the responsibility of all employees to integrate sustainability into everyday business practices.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS for SYSTEMS ENGINEER:

Education and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or closely related field and seven (7) years of traction electrification systems engineering experience that includes project management, systems design, construction and/or operations support, preferably in a transit engineering environment; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Licenses or Certifications:
Washington State Professional Engineering license with endorsement in electrical engineering.

Required Knowledge of:
  • Industrial power distribution systems and rail transit traction electrification
  • Operational characteristics, services, and activities of traction power and/or overhead contact systems engineering projects and programs.
  • Application of principles and practices of electrical and traction power systems engineering, design, and construction.
  • Oversight and monitoring of the integration and design of traction electrification systems within a transit system.
  • Federal, state and local codes, OSHA requirements, and related regulations.
  • Principles of business letter writing and basic report preparation.

  • Serves as subject matter expert for assigned agency design criteria, standard specifications and technical drawings for traction power and OCS.
  • Serves as subject matter expert in review oversight role for consultant design submittals for conformance with agency design criteria and national and local codes.
  • Serves as subject matter expert in oversight role for contractor construction submittal reviews and requests for information for conformance with contract technical requirements.
  • Oversees testing and commissioning activities for system expansion projects and existing system upgrades and replacements.
  • Performs field surveys and inspections of installed traction electrification systems.
  • Oversees hazard and risk analyses, value analysis and schedule reviews.

Required Skill in:
  • Utilizing computer software programs affecting assigned work and in compiling and preparing spreadsheets and reports.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other department staff, management, vendors, outside agencies, community groups and the general public.
  • Preparing, reviewing, interpreting, analyzing, and modifying systems engineering plans, drawings, specifications, contract documents, and engineering reports for conformance to professional standards and approved budgets.
  • Managing priorities and making decisions in fast-paced, difficult environments.
  • Preparing and analyzing complex data and comprehensive reports.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to concisely and accurately convey detailed technical information to others.

Physical Demands / Work Environment:
  • Work is performed in a standard office environment and in a transit system field environment including rail tunnels and equipment rooms.
  • Subject to standing, walking, bending, reaching, stooping, and lifting of objects up to 25 pounds; may occasionally be exposed to dangerous machinery, extreme weather conditions, and physical harm when conducting field surveys and when working in the field.
  • Role requires occasional night shift / weekend work typical of major infrastructure projects and operating transit systems.
