The Regional Transit Authority gets people moving around New Orleans. Our transit services bring hard-working commuters to their jobs, students to their schools and fun seekers to entertainment, shopping areas and restaurants. We provide mobility to residents of the city as well as tourists, taking them to and from their hotels to historical neighborhoods and countless attractions. RTA’s system includes five streetcar lines, 34 bus routes, two ferry routes and paratransit services. Our passengers take more than 19 million rides every year.

JOB SUMMARY
Candidates are required to have a strong user understanding and demonstrated expertise in planning, design and development of major high-visibility customer signage and graphic design.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Plans, conceptualizes, designs, refines and produces graphic design work for stations, facilities, vehicles and internal and external print materials to ensure continuity and integration of RTA’s Graphic Design Systemwide Standards.
  • Plans and designs signage and graphic design solutions from concept to completion
  • Supports analysis of signage, wayfinding and other graphic design elements throughout the system, including stations, facilities and vehicles
  • Investigates and resolves design problems by analyzing research data (to include initiating research) in order to identify the best possible solutions
  • Designs for a range of mediums, including static and digital signage
  • Assists in planning and evaluating design solutions
  • Collaborates with RTA internal clients to deliver design concepts and provide graphic design recommendations within time and budgetary constraints
  • Creates illustrations from photographs, sketches, blueprints and verbal instructions and ideas
  • Assists with the preparation of visual presentations and reports for management using a variety of software and materials
  • Prepares approved designs for fabrication by assembling finished conceptual designs, creating printable PDF files, and providing fabrication instructions
  • Reviews and approves proofs and sample materials
  • Assists with the development and management of production schedules for incoming design jobs
  • Supports to ensure deadlines are met
  • Assists with fabrication and site inspection reviews and approvals
  • Assists with station and facility audits to assess signage designs, locations, materials and installation methods

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Basic and current principles and theories of graphic design
  • Environmental graphic design, typography, and new media
  • Fabrication-ready production file delivery, as well as, basic principles of offset and digital printing methodologies
  • Macintosh hardware and related software programs, such as Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat, and Distiller CAD (Computer-Aided Design) tools, Font management software utilities, Microsoft Office Suite, and other desktop publishing tools
  • Administrative, organizational, writing, and visual/verbal presentation skills
  • Interacting professionally with various levels of RTA employees and outside vendors
  • Analyzing situations, identifying problems and recommending solutions
  • Successfully track multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Correctly create final production files for environmental graphic projects
  • Maintain organized and accurate graphic job files and update regularly to file servers
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English
  • Share the vision and passion to help drive RTA to be a customer-centric, world-class transit organization
  • Excellent organizational skills and close attention to details
  • Ability to work independently and set and maintain pace, keep commitments
  • Ability to work well in a team environment, highly collaborative

EDUCATION
A Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design or a related field

OR: An equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the position duties

EXPERIENCE
Five (5) years of relevant experience in graphic design, or environmental graphic design and production

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS/DEMANDS
A valid Louisiana Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions

Must submit to criminal background check, the results of which must meet hiring criteria for the role.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs. pounds at times to include boxes containing informational brochures and maps. (The company to determine if the position is a safety sensitive position.)
