Chapel Hill Transit, the second largest transit system in North Carolina, serving Chapel Hill, Carrboro and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking highly qualified and experienced candidates for the position of Assistant Maintenance Manager. This key position is responsible for assisting the Maintenance Manager – Transit, in managing all aspects of the maintenance division in support of Chapel Hill Transit’s 130+ vehicle fleet, including facilities and administration. The fleet includes standard diesel, hybrid and articulated coaches and is transitioning to electric coaches. This rare opportunity is available due to the promotion of the previous Assistant Manager into a new role with the Town of Chapel Hill.

Primary responsibilities include managing a team engaged in preventive maintenance, repair and planning of transit coaches, vehicles and facilities, including maintenance of buildings, grounds and bus stops. The position is also responsible for implementing and managing the division’s safety program, responding to facility and emergency situations and staff training.

This position requires a minimum three (3) years of recent experience in diesel fleet maintenance; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. At least one (2) year of the related experience must include supervisory and/or lead responsibilities. ASE transit series certification preferred. An Associate’s degree from an accredited institution or technical trade school in automotive/diesel technology, electronics, engineering or a closely related field is required. Candidates must have excellent communication, organizational, analytical, time-management and leadership skills. Experience with transit equipment, hybrid technology, electronics, computer systems, training, inventory and safety is preferred.

The hiring range is $47,117 – $62,170. Compensation is negotiable based upon experience and qualifications. Outstanding benefits are offered, including 100% employer paid health insurance for employees and partial employer contribution for dependents and generous leave.
