Summary
The purpose of this job within the organization is to supervise the day to day operations of the transit bus operators, ensure buses are on schedule and run safely. This job works under close to general supervision according to set procedures, but determines how or when to complete tasks. The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this job. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.

Essential Functions
  • Prepares schedules for operators.

  • Maintains data on monthly safety training classes for bus operators.

  • Monitors bus routes; follows buses or rides buses with operators to ensure compliance with established federal and state laws and regulations, and City policies and procedures; makes recommendations for changes and improvements to existing standards and procedures.

  • Responds to and investigates complaints from the general public regarding transit operations; resolves problems in a timely and efficient manner.

  • Engages in disciplinary action of employees.

  • Assigns operators to routes to cover shortages.

  • Assists with maintaining the assigned uniform budget.

  • Reviews and monitors pre-trip inspections; coordinates maintenance and repairs for equipment and buses.

  • Conducts safety and training meetings.

  • Provides information to the public regarding operational changes.

  • Performs related work as assigned.

Physical Demands: Performs light work that involves walking or standing most of the time and involves exerting up to 20 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis, or skill, adeptness and speed in the use of fingers, hands or limbs on repetitive operation of mechanical or electronic office or shop machines or tools within moderate tolerances or limits of accuracy.

Qualifications
  • Requires High School graduation or GED.

  • Requires one (1) year of experience in operating buses, coaches, vans or other vehicular equipment on the open highway.

  • Must have at least 6 months of experience in dealing with the general public.

  • Must have extensive knowledge of the City of Petersburg and also surrounding areas.

  • Must have experience with ADA policies and procedures.

  • Candidate must have extensive experience in working with computer software and have the ability to facilitate a safety training course.

  • Candidate must attend Drug and Alcohol program training within six months of employment.

  • Supervisory experience preferred.
An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the position.

Special Certifications and Licenses:
  • Valid Virginia Commercial Driver’s License Class B, with a Passenger Endorsement.

  • Good Driving Record Requirements consistent with the City of Petersburg's Administrative Regulation - Employee Driving Record:

    • Must not have more than six (6) demerit points within the past thirty-six (36) months;

    • No major violation within the past thirty-six (36) months; and

    • No misdemeanor suspension within the last twenty-four (24) months.
