General Description:
Under the direction of the Senior Planner/Scheduler, the Service Planning Intern works with DASH Planning & Scheduling staff to support all Planning & Scheduling functions, with a specialized focus on route/service planning, service analyses, performance data validation, schedule development and operator bid administration. The intern will also gain exposure to other DASH departments to learn more about the different functions that are necessary to operate a public transit agency.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
  1. Support Senior Planner in service planning, route analyses, and schedule development

  2. Evaluation of potential service changes using GIS, Remix and other planning software in support of Alexandria Transit Vision (ATV) Plan and annual Transit Development Plan (TDP).

  3. Aggregation, processing and evaluation of ridership and on-time performance data using Clever Reports, Ridecheck Plus, Hummingbird or other software programs.

  4. Coordinate with Operations staff on issues, including but not limited to bus stops, re-routes, and special events.

  5. Data collection, including ride checks, passenger surveys, ITS checks, and other field reconnaissance duties in support of service planning decisions.

  6. Assisting with the validation of APC ridership data and CAD/AVL on-time performance data in support of future NTD certification.

  7. Assisting with the development and production of operator bid materials.

  8. Shadow Senior Planner and DASH staff from other departments to learn more about the day-to-day functions of a transit agency.

  9. Participation in DASH events, such as pop-up outreach events, community meetings, etc.

  10. Attendance of internal Planning staff meetings to discuss ongoing issues and projects.

  11. Complete quarterly reports summarizing work completed and experience gained.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Basic knowledge of fixed route transit operations.

  • Basic knowledge of statistics and survey techniques.

  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office Suites.

  • Ability to learn proprietary software and programs related to fare, route planning, and scheduling.

  • Ability to analyze and troubleshoot various types of data.

  • Ability to use data to design and generate reports for a wide variety of audiences.

  • Ability to be self-sufficient and effective while meeting goals and deadlines.

Emotional, Psychological and Physical Requirements:

Ability to:
  • Work independently, managing deadlines and complying with reporting requirements, under guidance of supervisor.

  • Interact with DASH staff from other departments to coordinate on various assignments.

  • Make independent decisions within scope of responsibility.

  • Concentrate on priority tasks at times with minimal supervision.

Physically:
  • Sits frequently for long periods in an office environment

  • Light travel, locally

  • Lifts light loads at times (<50 lbs.)

Education and Experience:
  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent required.

  • Interest in public transportation.

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Transit Planning, Engineering, Business Administration, Statistics, or related field preferred.

  • A Minimum of (1) one-year experience with fixed route transit planning and/or operations including data collection, compilation, and/or analysis preferred.
