General Description:
Under the direction of the ITS Coordinator, the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Technician works with DASH Planning & Scheduling staff to support ITS programs, with a focus on hardware maintenance, installation, and monitoring.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
  1. Troubleshoot and repair ITS equipment on an as-needed basis, including Clever Devices CAD/AVL and AVA systems, Automatic Passenger Counters (APCs), SmartYard tags and antennas, Transit Signal Prioritization (TSP), and Destination Signs.

  2. Monitor and inspect onboard ITS equipment regularly, including Clever Devices CAD/AVL and AVA systems, APCs, SmartYard, TSP, and destination signs to ensure consistent performance.

  3. Install and acceptance test Clever Devices equipment on buses, including test driving.

  4. Remove equipment from retired buses, including the Clever Devices CAD/AVL system, destination sign keypads and controllers, and other ITS hardware.

  5. Assist with the installation and maintenance of real-time information displays at DASH bus stops.

  6. Conduct field checks of real-time information signs once every month.

  7. Assist with the calibration and validation of APC ridership data and CAD/AVL on-time performance data for National Transit Database certification.

  8. Assist ITS Coordinator in maintaining an organized, accountable inventory of ITS parts.

  9. Enhances knowledge on ITS systems, hardware maintenance, and other related skills under the direction of the ITS Coordinator and other DASH staff, including electrical systems troubleshooting, bus maintenance, and software programming.

  10. Assist with data collection, including ride checks, passenger surveys, and other field investigations, in support of service planning decisions.

  11. Assist with the development and production of operator bid materials.

  12. Participate in DASH events, such as pop-up outreach events, community meetings, and meetings with external stakeholders and vendors, etc.

  13. Attend internal Planning staff meetings to discuss ongoing issues and projects and give status report updates on ITS.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Basic knowledge of fixed route transit operations.

  • Basic knowledge of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) programs.

  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office Suites, particularly Word and Excel.

  • Ability to learn how to read electrical and system configuration drawings.

  • Ability to learn basic electric wiring skills such as splicing, soldering, and measuring current with a multimeter, while adhering to safety guidelines.

  • Ability to learn proprietary software and programs related to Automatic Passenger Counters, Computer Aided Dispatch, inventory management, and data collection.

  • Ability to analyze and troubleshoot various types of software/hardware issues, including CAD/AVL systems and destination signs.

  • Ability to be self-sufficient and effectively manage workload while meeting goals and deadlines, with minimal supervision.

  • Willingness to attend local and regional conferences and trainings to further develop ITS skills.

Emotional, Psychological and Physical Requirements:

Ability to:
  • Work independently, managing deadlines and complying with reporting requirements, under limited supervision.

  • Interact with DASH staff from other departments to coordinate on various assignments.

  • Make independent decisions within scope of responsibility.

  • Concentrate on priority tasks with limited supervision.

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

  • Ability to effectively troubleshoot, diagnose and resolve technical problems.

Physically:
  • Ability stand for long periods of time and work in tight quarters in buses.

  • Comfortable working with hands and maintenance tools in a variety of environments, including inside buses and outdoors at bus stops.

  • Light travel

  • Lift light loads at times (<50 lbs.)

  • Work in a maintenance garage with tools, as needed.

Additional/Miscellaneous/Special Requirements
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and ability to drive standard vehicles like pick-up trucks and SUVs.

  • Possession or ability to obtain, within 120 days of hire, a Class B (Passenger and Air-Brake endorsement) Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), highly preferred.

  • Acceptable criminal history record check upon hire and maintained throughout employment.

  • Acceptable drug screen results upon hire and as regularly required by policy for CDL holders.

Education and Experience:
  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent required.

  • Interest in public transportation.

  • A Minimum of (1) one-year experience working with software configuration and/or tools (for example, drills, ratchet/spanner sets, screwdrivers, and wrenches) in a professional setting.

  • A Minimum of (1) one-year experience with ITS Maintenance, IT hardware maintenance, or proven ability to troubleshoot electrical and computer systems is highly preferred.

  • Possession or ability to obtain, within 120 days of hire, a Class B (Passenger and Air-Brake endorsement) Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), highly preferred.
