Successful candidates will be hired into one of the classifications (Mechanic A, B or C) based upon qualifications and experience.

DESCRIPTION:

MECHANIC A - $32.31 Hourly
This is the most advanced level in the Mechanic Job Family. As a journey-level mechanic, this position works independently, may work as the lead within the area and receives limited supervision from the Maintenance Supervisor. This position is highly skilled and autonomously performs diagnoses, inspections and repairs of coaches and other vehicles.

MECHANIC B - $26.57 Hourly
This is the second level position in the Mechanic Job Family. This position works under the general guidance of the Mechanic A, as well as the supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor. This position assists with performing diagnoses, inspections and repairs of coaches and other vehicles.

MECHANIC C - $22.29 Hourly
This is the entry level position in the Mechanic Job Family. This position works under the direct guidance and direction of the Mechanic B and Mechanic A, as well as the supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor. Under close oversight this position performs diagnoses, inspections and repairs of coaches and other vehicles.

MECHANIC A

  • Performs complex diagnoses, examinations, and investigations to determine causes of defective engines, transmissions, differential units, generators, starters, pumps, air suspension systems, pneumatic systems, radiators, injectors, clutches, air conditioning systems and other vehicle systems and components.

  • Determines the proper course of action to facilitate vehicle repair, maintenance, adjustment, and component replacement by reading blueprints, schematics, job orders, and wire numbers.

  • Maintains, adjusts, and/or repairs all coach systems, components, and parts including hydraulic and electrical systems, brakes, front ends, and air conditioning systems to ensure the operational fitness of gas, diesel, propane, and CNG coaches.

  • Maintain, diagnose and repair all electronic equipment specific to the fleet's coaches.

  • Performs major overhauls, major tune-ups, and repairs to brakes and steering systems.

  • Changes windows and seats, repairs wheelchair lifts and performs minor body repair.

  • Operates coaches in order to diagnose component failure, make roadside repairs, or move disabled coaches.

  • Keeps up with the latest mechanical/technological advances and then provides functional training and assistance to less senior Mechanics.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

MECHANIC B

  • Assists with diagnoses, examinations, and investigations to determine causes of defective engines, transmissions, differential units, generators, starters, pumps, air suspension systems, pneumatic systems, radiators, injectors, clutches, air conditioning systems and other vehicle systems and components.

  • Helps determine the proper course of action to facilitate vehicle repair, maintenance, adjustment, and component replacement.

  • Helps maintain, adjust, and/or repair all coach systems, components, and parts including hydraulic and electrical systems, brakes, front ends, and air conditioning systems to ensure the operational fitness of coaches.

  • Assists with major overhauls, major tune-ups, and repairs to brakes and steering systems.

  • Changes windows and seats, repairs wheelchair lifts and performs minor body repair.

  • Operates coaches in order to diagnose component failure, makes roadside repairs, or moves disabled coaches.

  • May provide functional training and assistance to lower level Mechanics.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

MECHANIC C
This is a general listing of job functions and does not represent a complete listing of the positions responsibilities.
  • Assists more experienced mechanics with diagnoses, examinations, and investigations to determine causes of defective engines, transmissions, differential units, generators, starters, pumps, air suspension systems, pneumatic systems, radiators, injectors, clutches, air conditioning systems and other vehicle systems and components.

  • Changes oil, tires, replaces fluids and helps with minor repairs as necessary.

  • Helps to determine the proper course of action to facilitate vehicle repair, maintenance, adjustment, and component replacement.

  • Assists to maintain, adjust, and/or repair all coach systems, components, and parts including hydraulic and electrical systems, brakes, front ends, and air conditioning systems to ensure the operational fitness of coaches.

  • Helps perform major overhauls, major tune-ups, and repairs to brakes and steering systems.

  • Changes windows and seats, and assists with minor body repair.

  • Operates coaches in order to diagnose component failure, make roadside repairs, or move disabled coaches.

  • Upon demonstration of competency work with less immediate direction of more experienced mechanics.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Successful candidates will be hired into one of the classifications (Mechanic A, B or C) based upon qualifications and experience as determined by SacRT.

MECHANIC A

Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalent.

Verifiable training in automotive or diesel mechanics (may have been obtained in high school automotive/mechanics course and/or regional occupational program) preferred.

Experience and education equal to Five (5) years of full-time experience at the journey-level performing diagnostics and mechanical overhaul and repair of gas, diesel and/or CNG powered buses, trucks, and/or other related vehicles or equipment.

Required Licenses and/or Certificates:
  • Possession of a Mechanic A rating and/or possession of a Regional Transit Certification of ability to diagnose, repair, and overhaul electrical and mechanical systems for coaches, cars, trucks and other support equipment.

  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain a Refrigeration Recovery/Containment Certificate Type II (per Federal EPA regulations).

  • Possession of a Class B California Driver's License permit with Passenger endorsement on the first day of appointment and the ability to obtain a Class B California Driver's License with Passenger endorsement within 90 days of appointment.

  • Satisfactory driving record as determined by SacRT.

  • Forklift Operator certification or the ability to obtain a Forklift certificate with 90 days of appointment.

  • Obtain all tools required for a Mechanic A by the end of the probationary period. Tool list available with Maintenance management.

MECHANIC B

Education and Experience: High School Diploma or equivalent.

Verifiable training in automotive or diesel mechanics (may have been obtained in high school automotive/mechanics course and/or regional occupational program) preferred.

One (1) year of full-time experience at the Mechanic C level classification or two (2) years of full-time experience performing general maintenance, servicing, and repair of gas or diesel powered vehicles or equipment.

Required Licenses and/or Certificates:
  • Possession of a Class B California Driver's License permit with Passenger endorsement on the first day of appointment and the ability to obtain a Class B California Driver's License with Passenger endorsement within 90 days of appointment.

  • Satisfactory driving record as determined by the SacRT.

  • Forklift Operator certification or the ability to obtain a Forklift certificate with 90 days of appointment.

  • Obtain all tools required for a Mechanic B by the end of the probationary period. Tool list available in Maintenance management.

MECHANIC C

Education and Experience: High School Diploma or equivalent.

Verifiable training in automotive or diesel mechanics (may have been obtained in high school automotive/mechanics course and/or regional occupational program) preferred.

One (1) year of apprentice-level experience in automotive or diesel mechanics performing maintenance, service and safety checks of gasoline, electric and/or diesel powered vehicles.

Required Licenses and/or Certificates:
  • Possession of a Class B California Driver's License permit with Passenger endorsement on the first day of appointment and the ability to obtain a Class B California Driver's License with Passenger endorsement within 90 days of appointment.

  • Satisfactory driving record as determined by SacRT.

  • Forklift Operator certification or the ability to obtain a Forklift certificate with 90 days of appointment.

  • Obtain all tools required for a Mechanic C by the end of the probationary period. Tool list available with Maintenance management.
