GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Supervises the repair and maintenance activities of the Transit fleet maintenance center; does related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is highly skilled work involving responsibility for efficient performance of a variety of automotive repair and machinist tasks requiring a thorough knowledge of garage operation, motor overhaul and repair and purchasing practices. The work of this class requires planning and scheduling work so that all fleet motor equipment will remain in proper operating condition. Supervision is exercised over skilled and semiskilled personnel whose work is planned and frequently inspected. The work is performed in accordance with general policies established by the Department of Transportation. Supervision is exercised over Technicians and Helpers.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Illustrative only)
  • Assigns maintenance work through written and verbal instructions;

  • Takes lead in the general repair work on City vehicles;

  • Schedules preventive and routine maintenance;

  • Inspects, overhauls and rebuilds engines, transmissions, differentials and rear axle assemblies;

  • Orders parts, maintains inventory of standard parts;

  • Diagnoses vehicle problems using standardized testing equipment and consulting manufacturer manuals;

  • Responds to emergency road calls from disabled equipment and makes minor adjustments or has the vehicle towed to the garage;

  • Trains and/or supervises other technicians;

  • Oversees warranty records and works on new equipment;

  • Drives vehicles on occasion and may serve as dispatcher;

  • Oversees facility and tool condition;

  • Performs a variety of welding and body work jobs;

  • Maintains complex computerized and hand written maintenance logs and reports;

  • Must maintain complete set of mechanics hand tools.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Comprehensive knowledge of standard practices and equipment of the automotive mechanic trade; good knowledge of the principles of operation of gasoline engines and of mechanical repair on heavy trucks and road maintenance equipment; good knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade; ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions; ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems; ability to effectively plan, lay out and check the work of skilled mechanics; skill in the use and care of hand and machine tools employed in motor repair and adjustment work; skill in locating and adjusting defects in automotive equipment; good physical condition.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Consent to chemical substance screening consistent with mandated Federal, State, and City guidelines and programs, to include random tests for the detection of drug or alcohol use.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Comprehensive knowledge of standard practices and equipment of the automotive mechanic trade; good knowledge of the principles of operation of gasoline engines and of mechanical repair on heavy trucks and road maintenance equipment; good knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade; ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions; ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems; ability to effectively plan, lay out and check the work of skilled mechanics; skill in the use and care of hand and machine tools employed in motor repair and adjustment work; skill in locating and adjusting defects in automotive equipment; good physical condition. Possession of a valid Class “B” CDL motor vehicle operator’s license.

AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT:

Physical ability: Strength and agility sufficient to lift and maneuver heavy objects such as heavy tools and equipment, to climb into and operate and repair large equipment, trucks, etc.; ability to withstand working outside in all extreme weather conditions.

Visual ability: Sufficient to operate heavy equipment and trucks by both day and night, to observe unsafe conditions of roadways, to read and write reports, correspondence, instructions, etc.

Hearing ability: Sufficient to understand radio transmissions, conversations with other individuals both in person and over a telephone.

Speaking ability: Sufficient to communicate effectively with other individuals in person, over a telephone, over a radio.

Freedom from mental disorders which would interfere with performance of duties as described.

Salary Range: $65,000 to $70,000 Annually
