The Assistant General Manager of Maintenance serves on six-person First Transit management ream responsible for operating the state-owned fixed-route bus transit systems serving greater Hartford, New Haven, and Stamford, CT, including the CTfastrak BRT. This is our company’s largest Transit Management location with over 500 buses and nearly 1,200 employees. Areas of responsibility for this position include acquisition and maintenance of fixed route heavy duty buses and non-revenue vehicles; labor relations with over 200 maintenance professionals in three union locals, and implementing new technologies.

Essential Functions:
  • Serves on the executive team responsible for leading a safe, customer service driven, and efficient public transit operation.

  • Responsible for developing and implementing policies and procedures for fleet maintenance operations in three divisions which include Scheidt & Bachmann fareboxes and various pieces of ITS equipment.

  • Oversight of a parts department ensuring proper inventory control along with timely parts availability.

  • Develops specifications for new bus acquisitions, including battery-electric buses and bus-related innovative technologies.

  • Establishes and monitors maintenance trends and data to ensure operational efficiency.

  • Oversees new-employee, new technology and refresher technical training for all staff, including ensuring continuing compliance with Federal and state regulations applicable to all department employees and entire vehicle fleet.

  • Proactively evaluates processes and procedures to improve efficiencies.

  • Fosters strong working relationships within department, throughout the company and with key customer personnel.

  • Provides liaison with outside agencies including other transit systems and State DOT regarding relevant issues.


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, preferably in engineering, transportation and/or management. An advanced degree is desirable.

  • Minimum of five years of management experience, with supervision of professional maintenance staff in public transit or a related industry preferred.

  • Experience with maintenance procedures, inventory control, technical projects management, and/or labor relations in a union-shop environment is highly desirable.

  • Familiarization with environmental, occupational safety and health, and/or USDOT regulations is desirable.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

  • Exceptional analytical skills.

  • Exceptional problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to represent the organization in a variety of public forums and technically oriented research groups, demonstrating diplomacy and tact, during working hours or (occasionally) off-hours.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Most importantly, a drive to optimize processes and procedures as well as inspiring staff to embody a top tier maintenance operation.
