National Express Corporation, a leader in the bus transportation industry, is currently seeking an Area Director of Safety who would be responsible for reducing motor vehicle accidents, reducing work-related injuries, and ensuring OSHA / DOT compliance, through the development and implementation of local plans. The Area Director will assist each local branch / Customer Service Center (CSC) to professionally develop their safety and training staff. This regional expert will coordinate with field management to improve safety and training processes and “sell” safety to line personnel. This creative, dynamic self-starter will provide leadership and direction for our safety programs and will oversee a number of our Customer Service Centers (CSC) in the Western Region.

Responsibilities:
  • Assisting each CSC Management team in developing a vehicle accident and work-related injury prevention plan based on loss data and cause analysis

  • Assisting each CSC Management team in the consistent implementation and maintenance of Company-defined safety and training processes and systems

  • Providing safety-related consulting services, resources and materials to each CSC management team

  • Reviewing the monthly loss control key indicators report comparing vehicle accident and work-related injury performance with AOP goals; determining why variances occur and participating in corrective action taken in response to each variance

  • Developing and implementing safety awareness programs; researching and recommending safety incentive programs

  • Developing and implementing safety communication and training programs
  • Attending and making presentations at monthly safety meetings, start-up meetings and safety committee meetings

  • Developing Safety and Training Supervisors' professional skills, including presentation, teaching, investigation, employee selection and evaluation Providing safety training to CSC management team in accordance with Company-developed curriculum

  • Assisting in selecting and training new safety and training supervisors Communicating with safety and training supervisors regularly

  • Assisting in training new safety committees

  • Assisting in evaluating classroom trainers and btw trainers

  • Assisting each General Manager in evaluating the CSC's Safety and Training Supervisor's performance and the CSC safety and training program effectiveness

  • Conducting facility safety inspections and program audits to ensure compliance with Company policies and government regulations

  • Overseeing implementation and on-going compliance of Company programs including:

    • Defensive driving

    • Passenger management

    • Adverse weather/terrain driving

    • Accident & injury investigation and reporting

    • Post-accident & injury follow-up with employees

    • Monthly safety meetings

    • Safety Committees, including accident/injury review

    • Road-E-O competitions

    • Employee section processes

    • Other safety programs as assigned

  • Overseeing implementation and on-going compliance of Company programs mandated by government regulations including:

    • OSHA and DOT safety regulations compliance

    • Pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections

    • Hazardous Materials storage, handling, disposal, and employee right-to-know, and other safety programs as assigned

  • Assisting General Managers in preparing the Safety and Training sections of the Annual Operating Plan (AOP), including staffing plans and key indicator goals Conduct special projects as requested by the Senior Vice President, Safety


Qualifications:

  • BA/BS in Business, Industrial Safety, Engineering or equivalent experience

  • 7-10 years of comprehensive safety or loss control experience in ground transportation

  • Strong working knowledge of California Transit and Para Transit regulations preferred

  • Experience with fleet of 500 vehicles or larger, and safety programs involving 500 or more employees

  • Well-developed communication, interpersonal, and training skills

  • Must be able to travel, position requires approximately 50% field work

  • Strong computer, analytical and organizational skills
