COMMUNITY TRANSIT SEEKS A MANAGER OF TRANSPORTATION OPERATIONS (Starting Salary Up To $125,000 DOQ/E + Outstanding Benefits)

Community Transit, a fiscally sound, progressive, and well run public transportation agency of 700 employees, is seeking a Manager of Transportation Operations. Community Transit carries 40,000 passengers a day, serving communities, universities, colleges, primary and secondary schools, and businesses throughout Snohomish and King Counties, and the northern part of the Greater Seattle metro area. The agency is poised to take dramatic steps in its effort to expand overall services such as increased and expanded schedules, and the expansion of bus rapid transit lines. Residents of the Pacific Northwest have continued to support and expand their use of transit in dramatic fashion, and Community Transit has met that challenge and continues to grow with the community.

The Manager of Transportation Operations will be an important part of the organization’s leadership team. The selected candidate will possess an exceptional ability to relate to and communicate with people, and must be willing to embrace, utilize and implement new technologies, be a problem solver, utilize good judgment, and possess strong skills in negotiation. The position requires using analytics and metrics in assessing levels of service and operational performance. The selected candidate must be team oriented and inclusive, and place a value on input from stakeholders. The candidate must also be inclined to work collaboratively with other internal operations, as well as work closely with other regional transit, transportation, light and commuter rail operations in order to develop a seamless fabric of transportation options for new customers in the future.

The Manager of Transportation Operations reports to the Director of Transportation and serves as a key member of Community Transit’s leadership team. This position oversees a highly respected Transportation Operations team responsible for managing 200 coaches and a $42-plus million budget that includes the functional areas of Yard and Radio Dispatch, Road Supervision, Manpower and Payroll Scheduling, Management of Customer Concerns, and Coach Operators. The position has seven direct reports, four of which are Assistant Managers of Transportation, and is responsible for 414 Bargaining FTEs.

Candidates must be knowledgeable in transportation operations, including actively managing field operations, manpower and dispatching practices, and yard and fleet management practices. A record of amicable and productive labor relations and negotiations, and working in a multiple union environment while overseeing and managing union contracts is important.

The position requires at least eight (8) years of operations experience, including at least five (5) years of transportation management at a mid-to-large sized transit system. A bachelor’s degree in transportation, or a public-service related major is preferred, and may substitute for three (3) years of non-supervisory experience. Experience with state and federal requirements for transit systems and a working knowledge and exposure to the National Incident Management Systems (NIMS) and Emergency Operations Management is preferred.

More details can be found in the position profile and Brochure that will be linked to the posting below. The Manager of Transportation Operations is also provided a take-home vehicle, merit pay increases based on annual performance, and the possibility of relocation assistance. Community Transit is “all about” taking care of its employees, and it offers outstanding benefits, including an Employee Maintenance Center benefit that is focused on employee health, physical therapy, and wellness – located on the work site. The organization also offers generous medical, dental, vision and life insurance benefits for both employees and family members. A public pension is provided through the Washington State Public Employees' Retirement System, with a five-year vesting requirement, plus a voluntary deferred compensation program (457 Plan).
