POSITION PURPOSE

The HVAC/Electrical Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all air conditioning, heat and electrical components and their operation on all corporate vehicles with a primary function being electrical and secondary being HVAC.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Performs repairs, inspections, required adjustments, testing, troubleshooting, cleaning, lubrication, and scheduled maintenance on all electrical, air conditioning and heat related components in accordance with wiring diagrams, schematics, refrigeration flow diagrams, operation manuals and manufacturers maintenance instructions.
  • Performs preventive, scheduled, unscheduled or corrective maintenance, troubleshoots and tests all vehicle systems, subsystems and components using precision measuring equipment such as multimeters to test defective electrical equipment; flow meters, pressure gauges, leak detectors, vacuum pumps, pneumatic control testers and air velocity indicators for HVAC testing; brazing torches and soldering irons to repair leaks in tubing and piping; and other instruments and tools as required. Observes HVAC and refrigeration systems and components in operation to detect potential failures or locate causes of malfunctions. Dismantles devices and removes defective parts. Inspects used parts and equipment for changes in calibration, dimensional requirements and manufacturers specifications. Tests and calibrates systems and equipment to ensure proper system operations using test equipment or precision measuring instruments.
  • Maintains HVAC and refrigeration systems by performing scheduled maintenance inspections and leak detection tests, soldering or brazing tubing and piping, installing and replacing filters, metering devices and solenoids, recharging refrigerant systems and adjusting or calibrating thermostatic and automatic expansion valves to manufacturers specifications using approved procedures and test equipment.
  • Maintains HVAC and refrigeration service controls (temperature, pressure, solid state and pneumatic) by performing scheduled maintenance inspections and tests, removing, replacing or repairing defective or worn parts and adjusting or calibrating to manufacturers specifications using approved procedures and test equipment.
  • Maintains HVAC and Electrical components (circuits, wiring, starters, relays and motors) and mechanical components (compressor valves, piston rings, condensers, evaporators and air handling units) by performing scheduled maintenance inspections and tests; removing, replacing and repairing defective or worn parts; cleaning and lubricating components as needed.
  • Responds to and provides assistance in emergencies which require movement of buses involved in incidents and accidents.
  • Completes relevant paperwork and reports.
  • Performs all tasks and assignments within the established safety practices and maintenance guidelines.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

To perform this job successfully, an individual must have the following education and/or experience.

  • High school diploma or its equivalent required; Formal trade school or an Associate’s degree in automotive, diesel or engineering program or a related field preferred.
  • EPA Refrigerant Technician certification required.
  • ASCE Certifications preferred.
  • Five years or more of automotive/diesel electrical repair.
  • Valid Indiana commercial driver’s license with passenger and air brake endorsements is required; or the ability to obtain the required license within six (6) months of hire. *INDYGO WILL PAY FOR CDL TRAINING*

  • Advanced knowledge of vehicle maintenance and how to install/maintain/repair relevant equipment; this includes knowledge related to preventative maintenance, related safety guidelines/parameters, mechanics, electrical systems, HVAC systems, and the vehicle structure/body.
  • Ability to select and use correct parts, tools and test equipment to perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance required to maintain HVAC systems and support equipment.
  • Ability to operate special shop equipment (drills, grinders, fork trucks, hoists, cranes) and uses various tools.
  • Operational knowledge of mandated safety principles related to personal protective equipment, chemical hazards, lockout/tag out and general shop safety and cleanliness practices.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; strong listening skills.
  • Above average decision-making and problem-solving abilities.
  • Basic mathematical abilities (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).
  • Ability to prioritize, organize, and manage tasks and time effectively; flexibility and adaptability are required.
  • Ability to deal courteously and effectively with supervisors and coworkers.

  • Must be able to pass all post offer physical testing and be able to complete all physical job functions as defined in the Functional Job Description.
  • Ability to work night and weekend work shifts and overtime on a regular basis due to assignment shifts being picked bi-annually according to the current Collective Bargaining Agreement.
