Nelson\Nygaard Consulting Associates is seeking a highly organized, independent, and motivated person to support the firm’s nationally recognized transit planning and engineering practice in our Orlando office. This is an outstanding opportunity for the right person to become involved in supporting and growing our leading work in developing transportation systems for vibrant, livable communities on the east coast and around the country. The right person will be able to develop and provide integrated, creative, actionable solutions in keeping with Nelson\Nygaard’s current work, which further emphasizes creative and innovative community involvement.

We are seeking an individual with a minimum of seven years of experience and a strong interest in transit and multimodal transportation planning, design or engineering of complete streets, high-capacity transit corridors (BRT, LRT, streetcar or other rail corridors), as well as a background in developing sustainable strategies to improve community accessibility and mobility.

Responsibilities
In this position, the successful candidate will be expected to manage small projects and serve as a deputy project manager on larger, more complex projects. Work will include responsibility for client communication, overall task and project management, determining and managing analytical tasks, report writing and graphics development, public presentations, and other skills as necessary. The successful candidate is expected to support and lead proposals and other business development efforts. Providing guidance and oversight to junior staff is a must. You will work closely with Nelson\Nygaard’s principal, senior, and junior staff in our offices throughout the country.

Qualifications and Requirements
The ideal candidate should have a strong core focus in transit corridor planning but may also have a broad range of transportation and urban planning experience. Candidates must be able to demonstrate significant expertise in at least five of the following areas:

  • Bus Rapid Transit Alternatives Analysis and Conceptual Design

  • Light rail, commuter rail, and/or streetcar Alternatives Analysis and Conceptual Design

  • Transit/shuttle service design, planning, and operations

  • Relationship of transit facility design to active transportation facility best practice

  • Transit policy, funding, and governance

  • Fare system pricing, policy, and technology

  • Transit data analysis and visualization

  • Long Range Multimodal Transportation Planning

  • Bus transit speed and reliability enhancements

  • Land use and transit-oriented development

  • Multimodal/Intermodal facility planning

  • Multi-system integration and coordination

  • Public outreach and engagement

  • Experience with GIS, graphics (InDesign, Illustrator, SketchUp), modeling (Synchro, VISSIM, TransCAD), or database analysis

Successful applicants will be expected to:
  • Manage small- and mid-size projects

  • Serve as a deputy project manager or major task leader on large projects

  • Serve as the lead planner on projects of all sizes

  • Participate in select business development and marketing activities, and pursue new work in a cost-effective manner

  • Network and attend conferences on an as-needed basis

Above all, we are looking for someone who:
  • Understands the connection between transportation and equity and is committed to incorporating equity, diversity, and inclusion into their work

  • Is interested in working with our clients and communities of all scales across the U.S. and Canada to create more equitable, livable, and sustainable mobility systems

  • Understands high-capacity transit planning, project development, and design life cycle including the relationship to the FTA-funded process

  • Has skills in facilitating and mediating between the planning and engineering point of view, balancing thorough attention to detail with long-range planning vision and priorities

  • Has strong organizational and project management capacities

At a minimum, the candidate should meet the following qualifications:
  • At least seven (7) years of increasingly responsible experience in public transit planning.

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in city/urban planning, transportation engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience. A Master’s Degree in one of these fields is highly preferred.

  • Excellent written, verbal, and other communication skills.

  • The ability to manage complex projects on time and on budget.

  • Demonstrate advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
Past consulting experience is desired, but not required.

Salary and Benefits
The annual salary range equivalent for this position is industry competitive, depending on qualifications and years of experience. Benefits include medical, dental and vision insurance, pre-tax transit and bicycling benefit, a 401k program, life insurance and paid time off. Additionally, we offer flexibility for work from home up to 3 days per week.
