Summary
Under general supervision, safely operates a transit bus on an assigned route according to an established schedule; maintains schedule of routes; picks up and discharges passengers; collects fares; issues/receives transfers and provides directions. This position is Full-Time and may be scheduled to work any time between 3:40 a.m. and 12:00 a.m., seven (7) days a week, including weekends and holidays. Paid training will be provided to prepare for DMV driving examination and successful completion of the GTrans Bus Operator Training Program.

Representative Duties
The following duties are NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by employees in this classification. They only represent a summary of the primary duties and responsibilities.

  • Performs daily vehicle inspection on buses; completes appropriate documentation regarding mechanical deficiencies; report any safety concerns to Transportation Operations Supervisors;
  • Safely operates a bus along an assigned route; utilizing good defensive driving skills; maintains time schedule of the route; responsible for the safety of passengers;
  • Picks up and discharges passengers at designated bus stops; collects fares; issues, receives, and punches transfers;
  • Provides information regarding directions, routes, and schedules to passengers in a courteous manner;
  • Receives and transmits two-way radio messages to Transportation Operations Supervisors;
  • Uses on-board computer-based technology to receive instructions and to communicate with Transportation Operations Supervisors;
  • Prepares required documents including detailed accident and incident reports, daily logs, etc.;
  • Assists passengers on and off buses upon request;
  • Operates wheelchair ramp and properly secures wheelchairs, scooters, and other mobility aids;
  • Safety, punctuality, attendance, and good customer service is required;
  • Maintains order on buses while working independently with minimal supervision and does related work as required.

Organizational Responsibilities
Bus Operator is an entry-level class in the Transportation Department, GTrans, and under the general supervision of the Transit Operations Supervisor.

Education and Experience
  • Must have High School Diploma or equivalent G.E.D. Certificate.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must have six (6) months’ work experience involving customer service or public contact.
  • Must have five (5) years driving experience in California or another state.
  • Must not have any employment terminations for cause three (3) years prior to closing date and up to the date of hire.

Knowledge Of
Must have knowledge of California motor vehicle laws and ordinances, procedures for the safe operation of a motor vehicle, customer service techniques and practices.

Ability To
  • Work independently.
  • Skillfully operate a bus safely in various weather and visibility conditions.
  • Read and understand maps and schedules.
  • Read, understand, and follow rules, regulations, vehicle operating procedures and traffic laws.
  • Read, understand, and follow written and oral instructions given in English. Bilingual ability is desirable.
  • Understand highway traffic signs and signals.
  • Prepare simple reports and make basic math calculations.
  • Courteously interact with the public and fellow employees to maintain an effective working relationship.
  • Operate a wheelchair ramp and assist passengers with disabilities.
  • Remain calm in emergency situations and exercise good judgment.
  • Maintain a good attendance and punctuality record.
  • Maturity, tact, courtesy and memory are essential to the position.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions
The position is performed within a bus or transportation buildings and occasionally outdoors and is infrequently exposed to extremes in temperature, humidity or wetness, gas and fumes, dust and wind; continuous use of foot controls in repetitive foot movements and continuously exposed to vibration. Work involves long periods of time sitting, bending (neck), extension (up and down), squatting, climbing, stooping, twisting (neck and waist), and reaching at or below shoulder level. Extensive eye-hand coordination is required. Hand movements include fine manipulation, simple and power grasping, driving, steering, pushing, and pulling. Foot movements include using floor pedals for accelerating, braking, activating signals, bending, walking and climbing bus steps. Must have vision at or correctable to 20/40, depth perception, distance vision, peripheral vision and able to distinguish the colors red, green and yellow. Possess hearing in both ears allowing the perception of a whispered voice at five feet away. May be required to occasionally lift up to 33 pounds.

License
To be considered:
  • Must have and maintain, at the time of application, a valid California Class “C” non- commercial Driver’s License or equivalent
  • Must provide, at the time of application, a current (dated within last 30 days) California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) driving record printout obtained from a DMV Kiosk printout
  • Must have no more than one (1) moving violation and zero (0) points over the last three (3) years
  • Must have zero (0) license suspensions or license revocations over the past 15 years
  • If a traffic accident reported on your driving record printout was not your fault, you must attach acceptable proof (i.e. No-Fault Letter) to your application for further consideration
  • Must not have any convictions, administrative suspensions or revocations of your driver's license for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
Prior to start of training, incumbent must possess a Class B Instruction Permit, or Class A License, or Class B License, with "P" (passenger) endorsement and no air brake restrictions, with a valid medical certificate obtained from a City-selected health care provider.

Once employed, Bus Operators must possess and maintain a valid California Driver's License Class A or B with "P" (passenger) endorsement and no air brake restrictions with a valid medical certificate obtained from a City-selected health care provider.

Special Conditions
This position is designated as “safety-sensitive”. Bus Operators are subject to the rules and regulations of the Federal Transit Administration, the Department of Motor Vehicles, and other regulatory agencies. Candidates must be able to pass a job-related/medical exam, which includes drug and alcohol testing. Employment is subject to background checks and verifications. Operators must also submit to random drug and alcohol testing.
