The San Mateo County Transit District is the administrative body for public transit and transportation programs in San Mateo County, California: SamTrans bus service, Redi-Wheels paratransit service, Caltrain commuter rail service and the managing agency for the San Mateo County Transportation Authority. The District transports approximately 32 million customers a year and is one of the nation’s top transit agencies. SamTrans is looking for a dynamic and strategic individual to work to provide highly responsible and complex assistance and support to the General Manager/CEO in the direction and day-to-day management for all three agencies, SamTrans, Caltrain and the TA and leadership of the Executive Team. Due to the unique structure of the organization–a single staff serving three agencies-the Deputy CEO must be highly skilled at monitoring, directing and motivating employees to ensure the goals, objectives, and requirements of all three agencies are appropriately supported and resourced.

You will be responsible for the internal health of the agencies, ensuring that they model best practices for large public agencies, especially transit agencies, and exhibit a high level of coordination between and among executive divisions; conferring with the GM/CEO on policy matters and strategies to accomplish organizational goals, participate in the GM/CEO’s deliberations and decisions on issues, and review the recommendations of the Executive Team and senior staff; and providing assistance and support to the GM/CEO in the direction and day-to-day management of the agencies. Together with the GM/CEO, you will support the Executive Team and provide high-level management assistance; ensure coordination of day-to-day operations, planning, and financial functions, across divisional matters. You will also act as General Manager of the agencies in the General Manager’s absence.

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in business, finance, pubic administration, engineering, planning, or a related discipline with ten (10) years of experience in leading and managing in a large, complex and highly integrated organization. You should be a confident experienced transit leader who can quickly gain confidence of the Executive Team and senior management and a strategic thinker who can create and enhance policies, procedures and programs to achieve agency goals for a more effective organization that is financially sustainable. You should have the ability to lead and achieve objectives across divisional lines and be able to perform within a context of transparency, accountability, excellence and empathy.
